Bunion Surgery

There are different types of bunion surgeries and your orthopedic doctor will help you determine the best method for you.  Most bunion surgeries aim to realign the toe joint to correct the deformity.  It is important to note that the surgery may help cure the pain in your foot, but will not prevent it from coming back if you continue to practice the habits that caused the bunion.

Types of bunion surgeries:
1. Realignment of the tissues by lengthening tight tissues and shortening loose tissues.
2. Removal of damaged tissues and bone and repair with screws, wires, and plates.
3. Removal of the bump by cutting off the enlarged bone.
4. Cutting and realignment of the big toe joint.

First the surgeon will make an incision on your big toe near the joint.  Then he will realign the joint.  This is done by realigning the tissues or by removing tissues and bone.  If the injury is severe, your doctor may use wires, screws, and metal plates to correct the problem.

The surgical procedure is performed while you are awake and takes about one to two hours.  After the surgery, you will recover in the hospital's recovery room and will be able to go home the same day.
