Bunion Surgery Recovery

After bunion removal surgery, you will need to recover at home for several weeks and you will have to visit your doctor for the next several months to make sure it is healing properly.  You will go home with a special shoe to protect your foot and will require protection and support for the next 2 months.

Make sure you follow all the instructions given to you by your doctor to ensure the quickest recovery and so your bunion does not come back.  The bandages are there to keep your toe in the correct position during healing so do not remove them or get them wet.  When you shower, put a plastic bag over your foot.

Will I be able to walk?
You may be recommended to use a crutch or cane for the first few days after your surgery to keep the weight off your foot.  Keep the walking distance to a minimum.

How do I keep the swelling down?
Apply ice to your foot after surgery and try to keep your foot in an elevated position.  Swelling will happen and will take about 6 months to fully go away.  Don't wear tight shoes during this time.

Can I dance after recovering?
After surgery, your ability to do activities pain free will improve.  It is likely to move better but the flexibility may be reduced.

Will the scar be ugly?
There will be a scar.  If your motivation for removing the bunion is for appearance reasons, you should consult your doctor.

Is recovery painful?
You may be perscribed some pain medication after surgery, but there will probably be some discomfort for a few weeks.
