Why people have bunions
|
People develop bunions for a number of reasons. One way people get bunions is from through a foot deformity called hallux valgus which means the turning outward of the big toe. This can be caused by the wearing daily wearing of uncomfortable shoes that put your feet in an unnatural position. Think of high heels.

Their pointy toe squeeze your toes together and the daily abuse your feet take every day leads to the formation of bunions. This makes sense when 90% of bunion suffers are women. In a study by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, 88% of American women wear shoes that are too small and 55% have bunions.
You may also have a bunion because your parents had them and was passed to you in your genes. Some people are just born with big toes.
If your bunion does not cause you pain or discomfort, you do not need surgery. However, it is a good idea to learn how you can take care of your feet so that problems do not occur in the future. Generally, you should:
- Don't wear shoes that compress or squeeze your toes.
- Don't buy shoes just based on the size. Also pay attention to the width measurement and how the shoe feels.
- Your feet may change as your age so you may need to adjust your shoe size accordingly.
- Buy shoes so there is enough room in front of your big to. Usually up to 1/2 inch.
